Perhaps above all else, the Ceredigion coast is the best place in the UK to see bottlenose dolphins. They are extremely social creatures and a real delight to see. There are places, like New Quay harbour, where you can see them from land – a pair of binoculars help.
For the best experience, you can take a boat trip from New Quay, lasting from an hour, or you could spend a whole day surveying dolphins, learning from an experienced skipper. Getting up close with the dolphins could be a highlight of your holiday – a boat trip is good for all the family.
And you’ll probably see other marine mammals too, like Atlantic grey seals and harbour porpoises. There is plenty of marine birdlife to see as well. Don’t forget your camera!
Four sections of the Ceredigion coast are designated as “Heritage Coast“. Stunning scenery, picturesque villages and a wealth of rich and sometime unusual habitats, like the dune system at Ynyslas make the Heritage Coast one of Wales’s finest wildlife attractions. There is a Heritage Coastal path for those interesting in great walking in West Wales.
Turning inland, Ceredigion is rich in other habitats and wildlife, with many nature reserves to visit. Damp, heathy pastures are home to the rare marsh fritillary butterfly. The area is a stronghold for the red kite and chough.
There are wetlands of international importance that support wildfowl and waders and spectacular upland oak woodland.
